Keeping Your Dog Safe in Hot Weather

Florida summers are absolutely beautiful, but they are also sweltering. Hot weather can be very dangerous for our canine friends, so you’ll want to take steps to keep your pooch safe in summer. A Hobe Sound, FL veterinarian offers tips on how to do that in this article.

Water

Your pooch should always have an unlimited supply of clean, fresh water, but this is extra important in hot weather. If Fido is often home alone, consider getting an automated water dish to ensure his bowl never runs dry. On really hot days, drop an ice cube or two into his water to keep it cooler. Your canine buddy may also enjoy playing in a wading pool or doggy sprinkler. If you use reclaimed water for irrigation, get a filter for your hose before letting Fido play.

Shelter

If Fido spends time in the yard, make sure he has a suitable shelter, plenty of shade, and lots of water. Bring your canine pal indoors during the hottest part of the day, and let him get his yard time in during the evenings, when it’s cooler out.

Grooming

Fido’s fur coat won’t be as effective at insulation if it’s tangled, greasy, or unkempt. Brush your canine pal frequently to remove dead hair and dander. Dogs with thick fur may be cooler with a summer haircut. Ask your vet or groomer for clipping recommendations.

Storms

Florida’s summer storms can be pretty fierce! Many dogs are absolutely terrified of thunder. If Fido hates storms, bring him to an interior room when the skies darken, and put a TV or radio on to mask the noise. You might also try dog-calming shirts, treats, or sprays. Exercise

Don’t overexert Fido in hot weather. Try to schedule walks or doggy park excursions for mornings or evenings, when it’s cooler. High temperatures are dangerous for all pooches, but senior dogs, puppies, dogs with medical issues, and Brachycephalic dogs, such as pugs, are particularly at risk. Take extra care if your canine pal fits into any of those categories!

General Safety

Never, ever, leave your canine buddy in a hot car! Temperatures inside a closed vehicle can become deadly in just minutes. Rooms that don’t have fans or AC can also be very dangerous for Fido.
